Four Days Til York Marathon

In Which I BRING ON THE CARBS!

In just 4 short days, I, Marc Hemingway, will have finished my 2nd ever marathon. (4 days and an hour or so. Maybe two hours. Hopefully less than 4 days and three hours. Oh my God, what if I’ve not finished! What if I… Wait, what’s happening? Blog post? Ohhhhhhhh, right! Sorry.)

Before Blackpool Marathon I gave myself a list of 3 things that were rated as Happy, Happier, Happiest results. They were as follows:

  • Happy: Finish the Marathon.
  • Happier: Finish in under 5 hours.
  • Happiest: Finish in under 4:30.

I ended up nicely in the middle with a finish of 4:55. For York marathon I’ve got a list of 4 things, rated as Happy, Happier, Happiest, Happiester:

  • Happy: Beat my time of 4:55.
  • Happier: Beat Robs time of 4:45.
  • Happiest: Finish in under 4:30.
  • Happiester: Beat Steves time of 4:20.

(No, YOU’RE competitive.)

If I finish nicely in the middle again, I should get a time of round about 4:37 which I’ll be more than chuffed with. I’ve been taking this one more serious than the last, with more training (probably still not nearly enough) and am also lighter than I was in Blackpool.

For the April marathon I weighed around 210lbs but now I weigh around 200lbs, and have been researching how to carb up properly. Plus I’m taking 5 energy gels instead of one energy bar, and there’s energy drinks on the route instead of just water. As I said, taking it seriously.

Just spilt coffee down my t-shirt. That has no bearing on this post, but thought I’d mention it. Also, Chandler just said ‘Yes, I’m quite the woodsman.’ (On TV, he’s not in my living room.) Hahahaha! Chandler!

Reading about carb loading, they say to start loading 2-3 days before the marathon, so I’m starting tomorrow.Β 85 to 95 percent of your calories for these days should come from carbs and they say eat about four grams of carbs for every pound of body weight (for a 150 pound runner that’s 600 gramsβ€”or 2,400 caloriesβ€”of carbs per day.) One gram of carbs equals 4 calories.

For me that works out at 3’400 calories a day, with 3’000 being carbs. You know what that means? PIG OUT SESSIONS! (That’s how it works, right?) Of course not, (I just read that it doesn’t, gutted) what it means is that I should be eating 5-6 meals instead of 3 a day. (Turns out crisps are like 80% carbs! Wayhey!)

Also going to be eating lots of:

  • Rice
  • Oats
  • Brown Bread
  • Pasta
  • Chicken
  • Potatoes
  • Jelly Beans
  • Sports Drinks
  • Porridge

And then I’m going to go smash this marathon right in its mouth. Wish me luck!

(Also, thank you to everyone that’s congratulated me on getting into the New York marathon, but I haven’t. It’s original old York.)

  1. Wow! Thank you for the info!

So for three days prior to a marathon, I’ll be eating about 700 grams of carbs! Damn that’s a bunch!

I feel guilty about my second breakfasts prior to my training runs for my halfer.

  2. Good luck! And MOST importantly enjoy your “victory lap”! You’ve already put in all the hard work πŸ™‚

  3. How happy were in you in the end with your run? I hope it all went really well and you are the happiestest you could be!

  4. I hope you had a wonderful race!

  5. I know you will hit that marathon in the mouth, and the most important thing is to finish it. I tip my hat to anyone who trains and runs marathons, because it takes a lot of commitment to do all that. I pray you all the success and know you’ll do great!!

  6. Carb loading my favourite part. Add bagels to the list, high carb and yummy with peanut butter, jam or even marmite. Good luck

  7. Enjoy the carb loading and good luck!

  8. Geez, just thinking about that much food upsets my stomach.

  9. Glad to see you are taking more food with you this time. I usually take my first GU or what ever around mile 4. I want to keep the sugar levels up and not deplete the glycogen in my muscles.
Eat early, eat often. And don’t forget to drink!

  10. Good luck for Sunday, hope it goes well. Enjoy! I am looking forward to hearing all about it

  11. Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how you get on!

  12. Good luck on Sunday, Remember to go out at a pace you feel comfortable with. I learned from going out too fast on Sunday and it hurt my time tremendously.

  13. Best of luck to you as you land somewhere between happy and happiester this weekend!

  14. To each four points of your list, I would add “enjoy the race”! πŸ™‚ Having the Berlin marathon behind me, I wish you good luck and a very nice race! Even if this has nothing to do with luck since you’re well prepared πŸ˜‰ You’re gonna rock it!! Don’t forget to smile at the finish line after smashing the York Marathon right in its mouth!!

  15. Hope all is great! If looking for an energy/carb drink, I can suggest Carbo-Pro. Not sure you can get it in the UK. Hope the weather is perfect and you awake feeling 100% on the day and that all goes acording to plan! Smash that Marathon!

  16. Good luck – git ‘er done!

  17. Go punch that race in it’s face’s mouth!

  18. πŸ™‚
    Good luck!

  19. Good luck. I finished my first marathon only a few weeks ago so appreciate what you’re going through. Enjoy the first half, survive the second. πŸ™‚

Good luck with the gels/energy drinks combo. There lots of advice out there so hope you find one that works. Gels with liquid at a water station is the way forward.
My coach recommended 250ml energy drink at every station that had them, and take one gel at 15km, one at 25km, one at 30 and one at 32.

Look forward to the post race summary

  20. Best of luck! Cheering you on and hoping you get to be ‘happiester’ – love the happy ratings, think I might do the same for my big running event in November πŸ™‚

  21. Wow, so much admiration. Bring it on! Good luck, will be cheering you on from Mexico!

  22. Kill it! Have fun

  23. Carb loading sounds like my kind of training. πŸ˜‰
    Have a great run!

  24. White bread rather than brown I think for carb loading. Good luck.

  25. Lucky you getting into the York marathon. It’s a popular one and it’s only the first year of same.
Try High 5 Isogel … it works a treat for me during my long runs and the last marathon. And other gels don’t ‘cos they cramp me up a bit. Like all gels/sweet drinks it sticks in your throat a bit towards the end, but by timing intake of same for water stations, it won’t be too bad. May I offer another tip? Empty the gels into a water bottle and sip from the bottle .. they are too sticky and messy for opening on the run. One last thought … watch the roughage – brown bread and oats? I just had a big bowl of white rice (plain as you like) the night before my second marathon (have only done two) and, again, worked a treat.
Most important of all, happy running!!! Enjoy it! Woo hoo!

  26. Looks like you got a plan! Would suggest to skip the chips, not “eat a lot of…” by “take a little extra of…”.
Have extra fruits like bananas or apple during those days. Keeping you stuffed and carboloading at the same time. Drink a bit extra (note that I think I read the carbs make one keep the water, so there will be some extra water weight…).
Energy drink: can be replaced by orange juice or similar. I generally take one sport drink I like the day before the marathon. But it’s me, not you.. πŸ™‚

All in all: wish you all the best and enjoy! You’ll certainly have lots of fun!

  27. All the best for the race! Enjoy carbo loading and punching that race in the face!

  28. Good luck. Hope that you get good weather.

  29. Best of luck to you. I’ve only walked two half-marathons (two days in a row) before. Can’t imagine running one. Check that. I just imagined it. Hmmm, maybe someday.

  30. So many delicious carbs, so little time. Good luck!

  31. Cracking me up on your wandering post. Great wishes of speedy feet, enjoy your carb load, and beat those guys πŸ˜‰

  32. I wish you all the best! I can’t wait to hear how you did!

  33. Best of luck with your race! Carb loading might just be my favorite part of the training cycle. πŸ™‚ Enjoy!

  34. Good luck on your second marathon!! And I love the Chandler quote you snuck in there. I’m a Friends fanatic.

  35. Good luck at the “OG” York Marathon! Silly people. Can’t wait to hear how it went!

  36. I feel overloaded with carbs just reading this post! Good luck stuffing your face. Can’t wait to hear about your AWESOME race!

  37. Good luck!! Yay for carb loading. πŸ˜‰

  38. Best of luck! I ate my weight in rice and potatoes for 4 days before my race. Best part of marathon training!

  39. Good luck! Can’t wait to hear how you get on!

  40. Good luck on Sunday smashing the York Marathon right in its mouth!!! I can feel your determination.
For my last race I took most of my carbs in the 48hrs before the race in energy drink. It worked a treat. I drank 2 litres each day. Just stay near the loo and don’t do what i did and get stuck in a traffic jam dying for a pee!!!
